HYBRID Presidents Book Group

NOTE THE DATE CHANGE!
Due to Passover on the 4th Monday we will meet on the 5th Monday in April

In April we are discussing James Madison

We can't identify just one Madison book with enough copies in the library system for everyone, so you can choose from the following options.

The Three Lives of James: Genius, Partisan, President by Noah Feldman. This is a hefty 628 pages, though his presidency starts at page 503 and only runs about 100 pages, followed by a chapter covering his final days and legacy. The book begins with his college days.

James Madison: America's First Politician by Jay Cost. This is 399 pages, with only 73 on the presidential years.

James Madison by Richard Brookhiser. The most compact (though still informative!) choice at 250 pages, with 41 pages covering the presidency.

Mr. and Mrs. Madison's war : America's first couple and the second war of independence by Hugh Howard

1812: The war that Forged a Nation by Walter Borneman

These are strictly focused on the War of 1812, and aren't comprehensive assessments of the Madison presidency. But the War of 1812 is the dominant event of his presidency. And if you like war narratives then you will find these up your alley. You might also prefer these if you're done reading about the late 18th century! Each runs about 300 pages.

In this group you will deepen your understanding of the American presidency as we trace the history of the presidency, beginning with George Washington, and watching how American democracy evolved in ways the Founders never anticipated. We'll follow how presidents, both celebrated and forgotten, grappled with slavery, economics, executive power and America's role in the world. In doing so, we'll broaden our knowledge of Coolidge and where his presidency fits in the American story.

The group meets on the 4th Monday of the month at 6:30 PM EST, which you can attend in person in the Coolidge Museum or on Zoom. Discussions will be facilitated by Bill Scher, vice president of the museum’s Standing Committee.
