Writers as Climate Activists

Writers as Climate Activists

Part of the literary series, Modern Real and Surreal: Writers & Artists on Our Age.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, threatening the very fabric of our society.  Here, three writers use fiction, young adult fiction, and memoir to explore this thorny problem.

Readers:

Ellen Meeropol is the author of three novels; House Arrest, On Hurricane Island and Kinship of Clover (forthcoming 2017). A former nurse practitioner and a part-time bookseller, Ellen’s short fiction and essay publications include Bridges, The Cleaver, Rumpus, Necessary Fiction and The Writers Chronicle.  Ellen holds an MFA in fiction from the Stonecoast program at the University of Southern Maine. Brian Adams, is a recently retired Professor Emeritus of Environmental Science at Greenfield Community College and now devotes his time to writing romantic comedies centered on environmental activism. He is the author of  Love in the Time of Climate Change, Foreword Reviews 2014 IndieFAB Gold Medal Winner for humor, and KABOOM!, Literary Classics 2016 Gold Medal winner for environmental issues. He lives with his wife and cat in Northampton.

Jennifer Browdy, Ph.D., is an associate professor of comparative literature at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, with a special interest in what she calls “purposeful memoir”: personal narratives of social and environmental justice. The editor of three anthologies of contemporary writing by women from Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and North America, she is the founder of the Berkshire Festival of Women Writers and the Butterfly Leadership Program for teen girls. She regularly leads workshops in purposeful memoir and change writing, motivated by the belief that we can and should “be the change we want to see in the world,” starting with our own personal stories and moving out into the world. In January 2017 Green Fire Press will publish Jennifer’s two new books: What I Forgot…and Why I Remembered: A Journey to Environmental Awareness and Activism Through Purposeful Memoir and The Elemental Journey of Purposeful Memoir: A Writer’s Companion.
