Film: White Helmets
Northampton Committee to Stop War 2nd and 4th Wednesdays film series. Free and accessible. Discussion follows.
The “White Helmets”, this year’s Academy Award winner for best documentary short subject. It shows volunteer rescue workers putting their lives on the line to save civilians amidst daily airstrikes, risking their lives to rescue victims from the rubble. The film follows the daily operations of the group of volunteer rescue workers of the Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets.
While the film, by Orlando von Einsiedel, is full of harsh images, they are leavened with heartening comments by some of the volunteers about why they run toward danger while others are running away. One is a former fighter who decided it was “better to rescue a soul than to take one.” Another, speaking of those he saves, says, “I consider them all to be my family.” Still, there’s a little bit of hope here in a seemingly hopeless conflict. “In the White Helmets we have a motto,” one man says at the end of the film. “To save a life is to save all of humanity.”
