The View of Earth from Space: Music and Astronaut Imagery
Join us for a special presentation of Earth Music Theater Live (EMTL)—an immersive multimedia experience that blends live music, astronaut imagery, and spoken word to explore our planet from the extraordinary perspective of space.
Guitarist and sound designer Steve Thomas leads an ensemble of acclaimed valley-based musicians in a genre-spanning musical performance that evolves in real time with breathtaking imagery of Earth captured by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The program also incorporates the powerful words and reflections of astronauts and space explorers, offering a rare artistic glimpse into the experience of viewing Earth from orbit.
The ensemble features Chris Cheek (alto saxophone), Claire Arenius (drums), and Josh Metz (bass), whose dynamic musical interplay forms the core of the EMTL sound—blending jazz, cinematic soundscapes, and improvisation.
Created in collaboration with Dan Barstow, director of EarthMusicTheater.org, with support from the Association of Space Explorers (ASE), EMTL bridges art and science in a moving performance designed to spark curiosity about our planet, the cosmos, and humanity’s shared future.
A scratch-built scale model of the International Space Station will also be on display, giving audiences an up-close look at the remarkable orbiting laboratory from which many of the images in the performance were captured.
Through soaring music, cinematic visuals, and spoken word, Earth Music Theater Live invites audiences to reflect on the beauty, fragility, and unity of the world we share.
The Earth Music Theater Live show concept is a collaboration of multi-faceted musician Steve Thomas, and Earth movie maker Dan Barstow, with support from the Association of Space Explorers for the stunning astronaut photography.
