30 Poems in November: Writing Workshop

What makes a good poem? Or a great poem? In this workshop, organized as part of the 30 Poems in November fundraiser for the Center for New Americans and co-hosted by Sarah Sullivan (event chair of CNA) and Art Middleton (Writer in Residence at Forbes), we'll be engaged in three distinct prompts. First, we'll discuss a poem by Mary Oliver, question strengths and weaknesses, and use some of her lines, structure, or imagery to create our own masterpieces. Second, we'll engage in a brief discussion of erasure poems and use a diverse selection of texts from the library's collection to create our own erasure experiments. For those who stay for a third prompt, we will use a poem by local poet Howie Faerstein for further discussion and inspiration.
