Complicated History: talk by Katherine McClelland
Complicated History is a multimedia project that uses art to reckon with personal, local, and national narratives about slavery, war and privilege. The Hinckley family has a long history of prominent Northampton residents and while researching her paternal family, artist Katherine McClelland found that there was more to the story than she knew. This collection of portraits, documents, and images explores the history of five of her direct ancestors who were connected to Northampton. The intent is to challenge the North’s un-nuanced sense of being on the “right side” of history and to examine our complicated relationships to systems of oppression.
Katherine will deliver a talk on July 13th to discuss the journey of this project from initial inspiration, to research, to creation.
In-person attendance is limited to 25 in the Coolidge Museum -- please preregister so we can estimate numbers.
This talk will also be livestreamed on Forbes Library's YouTube channel -- no registration required, just click to watch.
This project was made possible by grants from Mass Humanities, which provided funding through the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC); the Northampton Cultural Council; and gifts of family and friends.
